2 TIPS AND TRICKS - To Do Feature
---------------------------------------

One feature of FrontPage that is frequently asked about is:

"How do I print a list of the broken hyperlinks that are generated by the FrontPage 2000 reports feature?"
----------------------------------------
Well Mark Rogers of Site crafters
[ out of date link - removed ]

...............
Has come up with the answer. Here in AccessFP Ezine we go into a bit more detail:

Firstly you 'Verify Hyperlinks' to do this you click on view in the FrontPage menu bar and select Reports | Broken Hyperlinks.

Tip: FrontPage will count links that have redirects on them as a 'broken hyperlink'.

To 'Verify Hyperlinks' you can click on the icon or select' Verify Hyperlinks' from the Menu bar. (If you cannot see the icon or do not have it listed in your drop down menu on the menu bar you can add it by using the 'Customise' feature under 'Tools')

You can either 'Verify all Hyperlinks' or 'Verify Selected Hyperlink(s)'

Tip: Modified pages should be saved to check the most current version of the web.

After using Verify Hyperlinks, you must add the broken hyperlink to the task list first.

Tip: To make sure you do not miss any broken hyperlinks click on the 'status' bar in the 'Broken Hyperlinks' view and all the broken hyperlinks will be gathered together.

Select a broken hyperlink.
Right click and click on 'Add Task' from the menu that pops up. Assign your priority rating, and fill in any details in the description box that you would like to add.

You have to add one space after the details that are already there and then enter your text. If you do not it will not show up in tasks view and the todo.htm list.
Click Ok.

Do this for all the broken hyperlinks you want to print out.

After adding the Broken Links in 'Add Task' you can view the 'To Do' list and print it if you wish. The path is _vti_pvt/_x_todo.htm

The 'To Do' list presents the links on your site (which is on your hard drive) as clickable.

Depending on which PWS you have, your route to the To Do list will be different. I use Microsoft PWS so mine is: C:\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\_vti_pvt\_x_todo.htm

If your working with Disk based webs just insert the path of your site on your hard drive before \_vti_pvt\_x_todo.htm

Example C:\My Documents\My Webs\mysite\_vti_pvt\_x_todo.htm

These files are in hidden folders so you may need to check the 'Show all' files option in the Windows Explorer. | View | Folder Options | View tab.

If you have a large site, after verifying your hyperlinks you can come offline and select each link and add the task. Then work on the links a batch at a time.

Of course there are other solutions to this problem out there and one is the Freeware application Xenu.
http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html
Xenu's Link Sleuth (TM) is a spidering software program that checks Web sites for broken links. Link verification is done on "normal" links, images, frames, backgrounds, local image maps, style sheets, scripts and applets. It displays a continuously updated list of URLs, which you can sort by different criteria. A report can be produced at any time.
Whichever way you decide to check your links, do it at least once a month and once a week if you can, keeping your site constantly refreshed.

3 GUIDE TO FRONTPAGE: Getting Started
-------------------------------------

FrontPage 2000 can be installed on PCs with Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT. FrontPage 2000 can be bought either as a component of Office 2000 premium Edition or as a product on it's own CD ROM. You can also upgrade your version of FP at a lower price and there is a Developer Edition as well.

In order to run FrontPage on your PC the recommended components are as follows.

* PC with a 486 or higher processor (Pentium preferred)
* Windows 95/08 or 32 MB memory for use with Windows NT/2000 (64MB)
* 50-80 MB hard disk space for the FrontPage application and more for the web
site you will create.
* CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
* VGA display adaptor (SVGA, 256 colour 800 X 600 or higher)

Note: If you have FrontPage 98 already on your system along with Gif Animator and Image Composer. You do not need to delete them, if you no longer wish to use FP98 but want to keep IC and GA then make sure they are already on your system before you install FrontPage 2000.

Note: If you do not have FrontPage Express loaded onto your machine but want to keep it, install it BEFORE upgrading the browser to the latest version. Anything over IE5 and you will no longer be able to install it, as it is no longer available or supported from Microsoft.

If you are upgrading from FrontPage 97 or 98, and your windows version is 95 or 98. Then you are advised to uninstall the Microsoft Personal Web Server, or FrontPage Personal Web Server, which ever you have installed, BEFORE installing FP2k. If you are using Win NT you are still going to need the Internet Information Server for your intranet.

FrontPage 2000 stand-alone or Office 2000 Installation is quite self-explanatory.

Firstly open your CD-ROM drive insert Disc 1 and the Installation Wizard should start automatically, if it does not you can start it yourself by clicking Start | Run, open the CD's root folder, and select the program file setup.exe.

When the installation Wizard dialog box pops up you are faced with two choices either 'Install Now' or 'Custom Install'. If you chose 'Install Now' it will delete any previous versions of FrontPage on your machine before adding FP2K. Amongst other additions it will also install the latest version of Internet Explorer.

The best thing to do is to choose Custom Install you will also be able to choose where FP2K is installed and it provides more control over how some features of FP2K are set up. Add your personal details and enter the CD-key for validation, click to accept the terms and conditions.

Press Upgrade Now for the default Office 2000 set-up, which includes FrontPage, press customise to see details of the selections and make any changes as needed. For the stand-alone version the steps are similar.

As mentioned previously if you want to keep previous versions of FrontPage, now is the time to tick the box labeled 'Keep These Programs'.

Now you will be asked to upgrade your Internet Explorer. Depending on when you bought it, the version will be either IE5 or over. If it is IE5 you can install FrontPage Express if not you must already have done so before installing any version of Internet Explorer over version 5.

Next you will be asked where and how you want components installed it is best to install all you need now. When finished click 'Install Now'. You can then register your product. Now you are ready to start using FrontPage 2000.

4 NEWS DIGEST:
-------------------------------------

<<ITEM ONE>>

Forget the Hard Line take the soft option
http://www.eudora.com/
An anti-flaming feature to weed out offensive emails has been added to the latest edition of Qualcomm's Eudora email software.

Moodwatch http://www.eudora.com/email/features/moodwatch.html
seeks out potentially objectionable words and phrases in outgoing and incoming emails. It graphically flags up offensive language giving words and phrases a level of heat with one, two or three chilli peppers. Users can set the level that will trigger these warning messages. The feature will also warn users if they click 'send' on a potentially offensive message to give them a chance to reconsider.

Testing reveals however that Moodwatch does not always get it right. Try sending yourself and email with "Tonight I am having dinner with Kenneth Anger, Klaus Fuchs and Alan B'Stard" Peppers everywhere! PCs compute but don't think, this tool can help but don't rely on it totally, just like the spellchecker really.

It couldn't be easier

>>ITEM TWO<<

Microsoft is no longer supporting FrontPage Express (FPE) and it will no longer be available for download from the Microsoft site. You cannot use the Add/Remove programs tool in Control Panel to install Front Page Express after Windows 98 second edition is installed. If you try to downgrade to an earlier version of IE 5, the same problem occurs. No custom install, no FPE. This is a concern for many educational facilities and not a few others as well. There is a workaround solution however.

Take out an old Magazine disc that has IE 5.0 on it (or below) and do a search for this file!

Fpesetup.cab

Once you have found it, open it up with WinZip and extract all the files to a new directory of your choice, and then double click on the fpxpress.exe file in the directory you extracted all the files to and you will have a copy of FPE.

So you can have IE 5.5 and a free version of FrontPage!
NOTE: The 'file new' command and 'help' do not work with installing FPE in this manner. You are not going to miss the help so don't worry about it. For further help with FPE check out the FPE section on AccessFP. As for the 'File new' command just make a blank.htm file and then click file open, open the blank.htm and make your page with it. It works just as good as 'File New'.

7 VIRTUAL INTERVIEW WITH A MEMBER:
-------------------------------------
This is where we conduct our virtual interview. If you would like to take this interview just cut out the questions fill them in, and send them in an email:

This month we interview:

Name - Tom Price
Age -
Nationality - US Citizen
Site name - "Solution-Shelf"
Site address - http://solution-shelf.com

Q How long have you been on the net?
A I have been surfing since 1997. I have only had a site up since August 1999.

Q What is your site called?
A Solution-Shelf. I picked it in the hopes of obtaining a name that would not encroach on an existing business or domain.

Q When did you start it and what is it about?
A I started in the summer of 1999. The site is about 'solutions' in the form of components, source code, applications and add-ins. It is a resource for those interested in Visual Basic development and Office applications such as FrontPage and Access.

Q What made you choose this subject and what was the hardest part in making your site?
A My background is in Engineering and Software development. I wanted to become part of the WWW community and decided my experience with Visual Basic could open the door. For me, the hardest part (still) is knowing what to do next. There are always new factors to address. It is often difficult to prioritise properly.

Q What do you think makes your site stand out from the rest?
A I offer innovative Application and Addin software. In many cases these items will be 'lite' versions that are free for the download. Lite versions include banners ads on their interface -- though I don't partner with any of the well known adware companies. Users can try or keep the software for as long as they like -- at least the banners will help with site exposure for myself and those that joint-venture with me.

Q Do you have any tips for other members?
A First, beware of SpyWare. It is very prevalent. I recommend going to http://www.grc.com/ and obtaining their free tools to hunt down and remove the stuff. About the only other thing I can suggest is to watch for announcements from solution-shelf regarding Ad-dins for FrontPage. I will be releasing a number of helpful ones in the near future -- many will be free.

Q What are your favourite sites? (Limit of 5)
A http://www.grc.com/
http://searchenginewatch.com/
http://www.lockergnome.com/
