Wassup at the AccessFP List? Find out every week here or join at the link above and find out for yourself.

This week Steven Fredette of http://www.prowebsites.net
Gave us the reference to the following chilling news.

"So he spent a few hours learning JavaScript and found that if he embedded "document.body.innerText" into an e-mail, he could access the message once it was forwarded to other people if they were using HTML/Java-enabled readers."

But he followed it with a good suggestion.

WYSIWYG

Two carpenters were having lunch together. As they enjoyed their midday nourishment, one of them looked at the others tool belt, and saw a hammer made by Stanley. Knowing his was a Craftsman brand, he knew at once that he was the superior carpenter.

In the Microsoft's FrontPage 2000 http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage

VS Macromedia's DreamWeaver
http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver

battle there are those that would have you believing the above tale as true. As though anyone could actually tell the quality of work done, by the tool used. This way of thinking is of course ludicrous and unprofessional. Yet there are many in the Web design industry that would have you believe just this.

How some came to thinking this way is due to many factors:

1 Pride in the tool they use (instead of pride in the work they do).
2 Believing in marketing hype.
3 Because "so and so" said so.

The list could go on. Though, these seem to be the prevalent reasons and have nothing to do with professionalism. The true professional keeps in mind many factors in selecting their tools.

1 Ease of use.
2 Site management capabilities. (If one moves a file into a sub directory, are links to this file updated automatically, or does one have to hunt down all links and updated them manually?)
3 Cross platform coding (Though with Internet Explorer
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie
at about 85% in the majority of site statistics, this is not as important as it once was).
4 What the client may be using to do updates to a Web site.
5 Price.
6 Special features (does it have Java Scripts, DHTML, etc ready to add, and configure?)

Most WYSISYGs have most of these. Which leaves ease of use, what the client is using and price as the main considerations. It would seem that Microsoft's FrontPage 2000 would be the hands down winner here. Does this mean that one should not have Macromedia's DreamWeaver as their tool? Of course not, but when viewed against the criteria, it doesn't deliver the same "bang for the buck", nor is your average client going to be using it (or have the time to learn it).

In conclusion, at this time there is no perfect WYSIWYG out there, though using a combination of Microsoft's FrontPage 2000 and Evrsoft's free First Page V2 (was 1st Page 2000) http://www.evrsoft.com, one can focus on making great Web sites. Isn't that what it's all about to start with?

Using the FP Server Extensions with FreeBSD 3.3 & Apache
http://freebsd.lanfear.com/howtos/frontpage.html

This HOWTO-like document is an attempt to describe my experiences setting up the FrontPage server extensions on a FreeBSD 3.3 system running the Apache web server. There are a good three or four web sites out there that try to describe this process, but all leave one or two major things out that prevent it from fully working.
