2 GENERALLY SPEAKING
-------------------------------------
UPDATES:
+++++++
Two notes from Jimco.
I've had many people report to me that the Alt-text for Image Maps and the Auto-save add-ins both generated errors when running them. I have corrected these problems and have posted the fixed add-ins on the Web site at
http://www.jimcoaddins.com.
Please uninstall any current versions (via the Add\Remove Programs dialog in Control Panel) and install the new
version(s).
The problems were a by-product of some code rewrites when I changed the add-in implementation. Jimco Add-ins is a one-man shop, and sometimes problems get by me. If you find any problems in any other add-ins, please let me know. I try to be responsive as quickly as possible to any problems reported to me.
Thanks as always for supporting Jimco Add-ins! I sincerely appreciate each and every one of you!
http://www.jimcoaddins.com
All of the source code for Jimco add-ins and utilities is stored on CD-ROM. I have been using packet-writing software to write data to these CDs. Today, without warning, the CD containing source code for Jimco add-ins and utilities became unreadable.
What does this mean to you? It means that any requests for updates to current add-ins and utilities will not be fulfilled. It also means that the process of updating Jimco add-ins and utilities to function with FrontPage 10 is going to take substantially longer than was originally predicted since ALL add-ins and utilities have to be completely rewritten.
Many years of work down the drain. I guess redundant backups would have been a good idea, huh. (smile)
Jimco
If anyone knows of a solution to an unreadable cd let him know ASAP.

DID YOU KNOW THAT?

According to McAfee the online Anti-Virus specialists AOL users are the targets of a password-stealing virus. If you receive and attachment named "Hey you" and it is opened, the virus will attempt to steal the users screen names and passwords, before sending itself to other users. The first sign of an infection is when a user has problems shutting down their computer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've been asked this several times in the past week so decided to include it in this weeks Ezine. This Tip is from my "FrontPage Newbie Secrets" E-book which you get free when subscribing to the AccessFP Ezine.
In order to avoid a strikethrough effect for AOL users all code is enclosed in brackets remove these when implementing the code.
Tip 3 - Removing Underlines...
Question:
I want to remove underlines from my all my links on one page and I want to remove only certain ones on another page, how do I do this?
NOTE: This technique can only be done in FrontPage 2000 by using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) but can be done through FrontPage 98.
For further details see:
http://accessfp.net/how-to.htm
This script, because it makes use of a style sheet capability, is only viewable in versions 4 and above of both Netscape and Internet Explorer, all other browsers will ignore it.
Answer:
To remove all underlines from your page, you will need to insert this string of code between the (<HEAD> ) tags of the web page:
NOTE: Copy and paste the code into Notepad FIRST then copy and paste from Notepad to your web page. This removes unwanted formatting.
( <style>
<!--
a {text-decoration: none}
-->
</style> )
If you don't want to remove all underlined links, but just specific ones on a page. After inserting the above code between your HEAD tags, you can encase the link in question with the following code:
( <a href="yourlink.htm"
style="text-decoration:underline">
click here</a> )
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Button Trick
This is an idea first put forward by Jim http://accessfp.net/newbies.htm
You use this technique with other graphics on your website, below you can see an example, look at the colour picker.
http://accessfp.net/ic-how-to-1a.htm
To get a better look underneath the hood bring the page into FrontPage, Click on 'Edit with FrontPage' in IE while viewing that page in your browser, it will appear into FrontPage just click cancel if a password box pops up. You will be able to click on the colour picker graphic and delete the picture, but the colour picker picture will still be there. That's because I'm using the background of the table cell and a transparent gif on top so I can insert an alt tag.

This week Clesha wanted to know more about tables http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/html/96/47/index3a.html?tw=html
And Kim was wondering about CSS.

http://www.bradsoft.com/topstyle/index.asp
With a smart tip from Tom Rowe (MVP) Karen was able to copy forms with no trouble direct from the html view instead of the Normal view, why did this make a difference? Sometimes not all the necessary tags are picked up in normal view, so use the html view next time you need to do this.

4 Guest Article - Love thy Neighbour
------------------------------------
Not too long ago the only businesses you saw on the net were large corporations doing their best to have you part with your money online. These businesses have great resources and were able to build, or I should say have built for them wondrous and grand web sites. Many costing more money to build then this humble designer will get in a years worth of designing. They were built by those cyber geeks that have, for all intensive purposes, had their umbilical cords transferred to the parallel port on the family computer when they where born.
But the Internet is changing.
With the advent of online companies such as Homestead and other free site builders such as Trelix, as well the development of FrontPage, individuals have found that they too can become a part of the Internet revolution. Just think of the opportunities these new entrepreneurs have. Individuals, who at one time could never dream of owning a business, can now develop an online business with a very small investment of money, and a huge investment of their time. New doors have been opened for housewives, the unemployable, single moms and dads, and just about anyone with a dream and access to a computer.
Recently, I came across a very disturbing thing and a forum designed to help people who are building their web presences. This forum appeared to have been set up in the beginning to support and encourage others in the community to build a better web site, but has now become a forum for a few people to discourage others and their endeavours online. What disturbed me was that these self appointed "experts" could do nothing but tell these new site builders what they were doing wrong, there was no encouragement, only discouragement. Most of it was delivered in a language that many of these newbies could never begin to understand.
On one occasion, when asked for clarification, the poor site builder was told that he better go out and learn how to build in html, or he should not even bother to have a business online, and if he couldn't learn html, then he should pay someone who could. Another was told that the product he was using to build his site was not a good product (in this case FrontPage) and that his site looked amateurish and was never going to be taken seriously by the online public. He was told that his site was obviously build with FrontPage and that anyone who visited his site would know what he had used.
My question to this is, "So what?" And to be honest, most people would never know what was used to build that site, because most people don't know how to build a site in the first place.
Yet another was told that FrontPage Themes ruined a site, another was told that the free site builder he was using could not make his site even somewhat appealing. I could go on but I won't.
My point is this.
I, and I am sure all of you, have at one time or another come across a site that needs help. So what do we do? As designers, do we email this poor site owner and tell him how bad his site is, or do we lend a helping hand? Do we carefully and genitally direct this person to a better solution or do we belittle him and drive him from the web? I have on a number of occasions offered to help some of these site builders, and have gone so far as to build them, on my own time, a theme and a template, and given it to them for free. Don't misunderstand, I don't do this to be a hero, I do it because as big as cyber space is, it is a very small community, because once, someone helped me. Thank you Karey!
So why use FrontPage to build your site?
FrontPage is one of the most respected html editor programs available on the market today. And as evidenced by the many hosts out there upgrading to support FrontPage extensions, is becoming much better supported online. Why are they doing this? Well the answer can only be that many people are using FrontPage.
FrontPage is a great program for those people who wish to be actively involved with their online business and not have to depend on a web designer to update his or her site. When a business has a custom theme package developed or purchases a theme package from a theme designer; he or she gets what is essentially a turnkey operation. All they need to do is add their content.
Set up to be as easy to use as a word processor, FrontPage offers the ease to update and maintain their sites, that until recently could only be done with a webmaster or expensive maintenance package through a web designer.
And for all you newcomers to web site design, here are a few encouraging words and a few pointers I hope you will all appreciate.
1 First, don't worry how you get you site online just get it online. Use what is available, if you are financially not able to buy a program to build your site, use the free site builders available at most of the "Free" host services. They are a great place to start, and often you don't need any know how to get things going. And it is a great place to learn the ropes.
2 If you are using FrontPage, have a custom theme package developed for your business. If you can't afford this, then grab a theme package from a FrontPage theme designer, many theme designers will offer "Free" themes to those who visit their sites.
3 If you are having problems with FrontPage or the other site builders, ask questions. More often then not someone will be there to lend a hand.
4 Before you get into building your business, start with a small project. Build a personal web site, or a family site that you can practice with, and test out scripts and other online tools.
5 Educate yourself. There are many great sites out there that have tutorials on the programs you are using. Be it FrontPage, Paint Shop, etc, there is help out there for you.
6 Never get discouraged by others telling you your site is amateurish. Keep in mind that you are not alone out there and everyday someone new gets online to build his or her own dreams. And most of them know very little about html and building a web site, but they are there giving it the best go they can.
7 And most of all be proud of what you have accomplished, you are joining a new revolution in business and some day you can say you were there when it all started.
