DID YOU KNOW THAT?
++++++++++++++++++
Did you know that Netscape does not like to bookmarks that start with different cases? For instance if a bookmark called 'go' were linked to 'Go' eg (<href="#Go">Go to section b</a>) this would not work in Netscape.

You should always select your text corresponding part of the bookmark from the Bookmark dropdown list in the 'Create Hyperlink' dialog box instead of typing them in the URL text field. NOTE: Your target page must remain open for the bookmarks to be listed in the dropdown list.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Would you like to print out a list of all the files on your web? Or perhaps make a comprehensive contents page in alphabetical order? This is how to do it.
Go to View Reports | All Files (double click to go into All Files) now depending on weather you want a full listing or just a A-Z contents file select all the files or just the htm files you can sort them by clicking on type and this will sort them into files of type.
Once you have your selection right click on a file and choose properties | Workgroup tab and assign a Category Name (select any) to all files by ticking one of the boxes on offer. Next you create a new page and insert a Category bot. From the Menu bar Insert | Component | Categories you can sort the files by date or title and include the date the file was last modified and comments added to the file. Choose a category to list the files by and click ok. You must view in the browser to see the results. Mark that page as 'Do not Publish' so it won't appear in your online web, then you can print it from the browser.
NOTE: If you have a large web it may take some time to list all files.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Did you know that Netscape does not like spaces in file names? If you have great things here.htm it should read great_things_here.htm but it would be tedious to start going through all your links so Jimco's utilities for FrontPage has a great FREE add-on that will Remove spaces from file and folder names and replace them with underscores, get it at:

4 Guest Article - "Error 404: File not Found"
------------------------------------

Approximately 30% of Web sites have at least one broken link.

The average lifetime of a web page address is just 44 days and broken links are considered the second biggest problem of the Internet. As soon as you rename, move, or delete a page, any links to that page become broken. For end users, broken links are frustrating. For website owners and administrators, the results can be much more severe. They halt traffic on your website and, crucially, may lose you business. What can we do about it?

First we should understand the difference between internal and external links. An internal link connects pages on the same web site. An external link connects a page from one website to another.

An Internal link should never be broken and there are plenty of tools to help. Just be consistent when designing or maintaining your site.

There are two ways we can cut down on Error 404.

1 If you do not have access to your host server the only thing you can do, is when you want to delete a page wipe the page and insert the template 404 you made earlier. In this Error 404 you redirect users to the home page, which of course always has the same address index.htm.

What should your Error 404 message consist of?

In this instance start with an apology and explain the page no longer exists. You might list similar pages on your site if this is feasible. Include a search field and your email address too.

http://www.mackie.com/wewanttoseeyourfunny404  is an example of how you can make your 404 errors humorous. I think this says a lot about a company in the way that they deal with such small matters. One other you should look at is
http://www.scintilla.utwente.nl/asdfhjkl  chortle, chortle.

2 If you do have access to your server there is much more that can be done.

404 Research Lab
http://www.plinko.net/404/history.asp

404 Research Lab goes into much greater detail and lists how to accomplish changing your 404 Error page with many different servers.

If you want to use ASP to report your 404 errors to you via email, you can find further instructions below.

http://www.asp101.com/articles/custom404/index.asp

However below are some other things you need to know.

As with the first method you need to make a custom Error 404.
This should include the following:
An apology for the requested page not being available
A listing of the most common mistakes, for example has the user typed in .htm when your site uses .html?

Tip: Look at your log files to see what errors are made the most.

You can also provide a constructive error message if possible. To do this you need to recompile the server to improve error handling. Apache supports this feature (mod_speling) but it is not compiled by default. This feature performs a spelling check on any erroneous URLs to see if they are a close match for valid URLs.

Also the error page should have a search field linked to the site's search engine. Users may be able to input a query to locate the desired page.

NOTE: Internet Explorer 5.0 assumes that anything smaller than 512 bytes is a badly written server error message and replaces it with its own text. So you need to make your customized Error 404 message more than 512 characters long to have it displayed by IE5.

Also include your email address in case of problems.

Now we take look at external links and ways to reduce broken hyperlinks.

The problem becomes most acute when you have links from your own site to pages on other sites. (External links) However, using FP2k's Report 'Broken hyperlinks' feature in FrontPage 2000 is quite easy. (See the first issue (To Do) for an explanation on how to do this.) For other FrontPage versions you can use online alerter tools. (See below)

What about those links pointing to your website? How do other webmasters know when you have renamed a page? Keeping links to your site is vitally important so what can you do?

1 You can keep a page at the old location that redirects visitors. How do you do this?

When you want to rename DON'T! Put a redirect on it to the new page (See Issue 10 'How do they do that? - Pointing the way') For full instructions.

Here is a little further information not included in the above short article. Simply open the Page Properties dialogue box, then select the Custom Tab and then the Add button. Under Name, type in "refresh", then under "value" enter "0;URL=http://www.yourwebsite.com/" where "0" is the number of seconds before it redirects to the new location.

Something else that should be noted is that since I've had my asp 404 code installed and received emails telling me they visitors were trying to find such files as:

/stats
/ftp.log
/passwrd.txt
/passwords
/password
/password.txt
/adpassword.txt
/passwd
/passwd.txt
/passfile

I could if I wished make a special page where anyone accessing those pages would be redirected to a page, which stated I had captured their IP address and would be reporting their intrusion to their ISP.

2 You can send emails to the Webmasters of the sites pointing to your page and ask them to fix the link. How do you find these sites?

a You can use an alerter tool such as LinksToYou http://www.linkstoyou.com/ , which generates links pointing to YOUR Web Site absolutely free.

b You can examine your tracker logs for referrers, keeping a tracker log at your old url gives you more even more information to work with. One such tracker is Extreme Tracker
http://www.extreme-dm.com/tracking/?reg

c Better still; try the online thin client version of Linkguard Online free from http://www.linkguard.com

You might want to use the robots.txt file to stop search engines indexing pages that are moved or renamed frequently this link explains it what it's all about.
http://www.internet-tips.net/Advertising/robots.htm

Approximately 30% of Web sites have at least one broken link.
Do not let your site be one of them. Sites often change their
URL; do not let someone else's URL changes affect the quality of your site. If your visitors encounter a broken link on your site
it reflects on you and you don't want to lose a visitor just
because the URL you linked to changed before you had a chance to update it. Checking the links on your site need not be a tedious process, so check them regularly.

To help your visitors help you, insert a 'Report Dead Link' which they can click on. You can also configure this to arrive in your inbox with some details already filled in. (Not all browsers and Email editors will support this. How do you do this?

Insert in your html or using the hyperlink icon you can use something like the following:

mailto:webmaster@accessfp.net?subject=Dead Link - http://accessfp.net/2-FP-Links.htm&Body=The Dead link is:

This email will tell you when it arrives in your inbox, the page, the broken link was found on and all the visitor has to do is insert the broken link into the body of the email, the To and Subject lines and part of the Body are filled in already.

If you use this tip please encourage your visitors to use it on their sites as well, the less dead links the better!

You can see this in action on every page at http://accessfp.net

Sites for further information:

Please take a look at them all because they list further things you should know that I have not covered above.
