QUESTION:

Sometimes when I edit my shared borders the content has not changed when I next open the page, why is this?

When you edit the content in a shared border in FrontPage 2000 and you do NOT save the page before closing it, the original version still appears when you open the page again. This happens because FrontPage 2000 caches the content of the shared borders.

To fix this, you have to exit FrontPage and restart it; this will clear the memory in FrontPage 2000.

1) Quit FrontPage 2000.
2) Start FrontPage 2000.
3) On the 'File' menu, click 'Recent Files'.
4) Click the page at the top of the list.

NOTE: This should work on all platforms running IE 4.x or 5.x

4 GUEST ARTICLE OR TIP
------------------------------------

So…You Want A Website

Of course you do. In fact, everyone has one and so must you. But - where to begin? You could sign up for a free server and use their proprietary software. Maybe you should run out and buy whatever favorite program 'du jour' and wrestle with its complexities. Should you host what you manage to tap out on your 'free' ISP allotment? These questions reflect the sorts of monumental decisions most new 'webmasters' face once they make that crucial decision about a 'web presence.' While these alone can stall even the most motivated, the most crucial element of web design has not yet been considered, in most cases. That element is PURPOSE.

No program, no array of features or graphics, no perfect color scheme or clever text makes up for a site that has no 'raison d'être'- reason for being. That reason can be silly, lighthearted 'pass around' pages, original art or prose, family photos, or feature your pet. But these sites require the same sort of mapping and planning as a 1000 page e-commerce site, and this is where the design element begins. You cannot make good choices about where to locate your site or what software to use, until you decide what your PURPOSE is.

One good tool to formulate your PURPOSE is a mission statement . In some cases, a mission statement is incorporated into your index page. A well thought out mission statement extends a promise of sorts to your site visitors. You tell them what to expect from your creation, what you are trying to achieve, and whether this site offers them what they are seeking. The mission statement also serves another purpose-it reminds YOU what your 'promise' is, and is the foundation upon which your site is grown. It is the keystone to your SITEMAP.

A sitemap begins as what you called an 'outline' in school. An outline is an essential first step in your planning for your new web site. It is the skeleton upon which your colors, buttons, bars, logo, photos and prose rest. It is your roadmap as well as a guide for your visitors-and in many cases, creates a 'stickiness' to your site as it catches your visitor's attention and leads them through your creation in a logical, anticipate-able manner. Just as a good book transports you to an almost palpable world of landscape, characters, sounds and smells- a good web site immerses a visitor in your PURPOSE and helps you deliver your 'promise.'

Your sitemap and mission statement serve you in another way. They set parameters around which you will decide what host and what software will best help you fulfill your promise. The mission statement and site map may also serve as a reality check for you-the designer. To fulfill your promise, what technology is essential, desirable, or on your wish list? What is your current skill level? Will you need to take a course or two (maybe even online) to use the technology to deliver the promise? Will you need e-commerce features to sell your products or talents? What type servers work best with your design software and features? What will this site cost?

NEW SERVICE: Free Security Analysis

Bravenet.com, in partnership with Internet Security leader
Symantec.com, has developed a pair of free tools to help you
analyze your computer's security online.

1. PC SECURITY:

This tool tests your susceptibility to the following security
threats and ells you how to make your PC more secure:

Hacker Prevention: Find out if your computer is susceptible to
unauthorized network communication.

Virus Protection: Searches your computer for a current antivirus
program and recent virus definitions. Find out if your computer
is susceptible to Trojan horse applications.

Privacy Protection: Find out if your browser reveals personal
information, such as your email address and the sites you last visited. Find out if your computer is exposing information about your computer to Internet hackers.

2. VIRUS CHECK:

The second security tool is the Free Virus Check, which examines your PC using Symantec's virus detection technology to determine if it is infected by any known virus, including the following:

VBS.Stages / VBS.LoveLetter
ILOVEYOU / LoveBug
W97M.Melissa.BG / ResumeWorm
W97M.Resume.A / Win95.CIH
CIH / Chernobyl / Happy99

Try these free security analysis tools and find how well (or
poorly) your system is protected. You won't regret it.
