2 TIPS AND TRICKS -
---------------------------------------
Do People link to your graphics and steal your bandwidth? Well we have a solution at hand for that problem with this tip from James Huggins (with some amendments by the editor)
If you have built your site with FrontPage and rename a page or a graphic, FrontPage will go through the site and correct all the links and references.
Knowing this here is a strategy (that works best with small numbers of graphics).
(1) Store all your graphics in a subdirectory (e.g., i1 like \i1\graphic.jpg )
(2) When you decide to rename, use FrontPage on your PC to rename the directory on your PC (e.g., from i1 to i2)
(3) FrontPage will automatically adjust all references.
(4) Do not forget to recalculate hyperlinks
If your using FTP:
(a) On the server, use FTP to rename the image directory (e.g., i1 to i2)
(b) Now, reload all the pages from your PC to the server.
If you use FrontPage extensions on the server and publish:
(a) You can either open the site live and do as above or just republish to the server.
Tip by: James S. Huggins
http://www.jamesshuggins.com/
Further to this tip Melodie Fahrenthold has put together a terms of use page with warnings on why it's not a good idea to steal her graphics.

Have you checked YOUR copyright notice? Is it out of date?
Many people forget to change their notice when the year changes. You can do a simple find and replace if you don't use shared borders or include pages. Your copyright notice should read something like

3 GUIDE TO FRONTPAGE - "Create & moderate a Discussion web"
-------------------------------------
How to make a discussion web and include it in a current web site...
A discussion group is a FrontPage web that supports interactive discussions of topics by users. Users submit topics by entering text in a form, they search the group using a search form, and they access articles using a table of contents.
The easiest way to create a discussion group is by using the Discussion Web Wizard.
To create a discussion group and include it in your web site
First open up the website you wish to add a discussion web to then:
1 On the FrontPage menu, select File | New | Web.
(Here is the essential part) in the 'New' dialog box that pops up...on the Right hand side at the top is a little box which you must tick (it says next to the box' Add to current web') This will add your discussion web to the website your in.
2 In the 'New' dialog box, select Discussion Web Wizard and click OK.
3 In the 'Discussion Web Wizard' dialog box, Press Next then select the main features for your discussion from the list provided then click next.
A Table of Contents contains hyperlinks to the discussion topics.
A Search Form lets users search the discussion topics for a word or phrase.
(if I were you I would click threaded replies) Threaded Replies allow users the choice of either creating new top-level topics for discussions or replying to topics in current discussions.
A Confirmation Page displays a confirmation of an entry in a discussion to a user.
4 Enter FrontPage web Title of your discussion group, and the name for the discussion folder Usually it is best to leave the FrontPage default name in) and click next.
5 Choose the input fields for the submission form from the list provided click next.
6 You are now asked if you want the web to be protected or not select whether or not users will be required to register* for the FrontPage discussion web and click Next. If you select to register users, the Discussion Web Wizard will create a registration form. Insert the registration form in your root FrontPage web to make it available to users.
7 Select the sort order for the table of contents and click next. (Newest to oldest is best)
8 Specify whether or not you want the table of contents to replace your home page and click Next.(say NO you don't want the discussion web to overwrite your main web's index page)
9 Select the settings for the Search form and click next.
10 Select a frameset (if applicable) in which to display the discussion group and click next
11 On any panel of the Discussion Web Wizard, you can click Finish to create the FrontPage discussion web using defaults for any settings you did not modify at this point you can go back using the back button or click Finish to conclude the creation of your discussion web.
12 The discussion web is then created and appears in your files and folders. Select the file named disc1_frm.htm and drag it into your navigation view to include it in your Navigation bars if you use them. Click on the name of the file in navigation view to select it and right click and choose rename change to something more appropriate than Frameset for discussion and then right click within the navigation view and select apply changes. The dw is then updated. Double the file to open or right click and choose open and customise the dw as needed
To moderate a discussion group
First Open the web live
Open up FrontPage close down any webs you have open.
To open the site live
File | Open | on the pop up box click 'Web Folders' on the left hand menu
Insert the url of the site you wish to open
e.g.: http://www.accessfp.net/
NOTE: You must manually insert the url as you cannot copy and paste into this box. (Include the slash at the end) Click ok
A box will appear asking for your username and password insert these press ok. In FrontPage, click on the navigation view so you know when the site will come in.
Next go to:
1 Tools menu | Web Settings
2 In the Advanced tab, select 'Show Documents in Hidden Directories'.
3 Click OK.
4 On the View menu, choose Refresh.
5 Change to the Folders view to see the pages (named 0001.htm, 0002.htm, etc.) created by users.
Do not delete offending articles. Open them up and type a standard message replacing the article body, such as "[Deleted Article]." This will protect forward and backward hyperlinks to other articles in the thread.
When you want to move your site to another host. Download your site first so you can take your posts with you. The posts reside on the host server, NOT on your hard drive where your local web resides. So you must d first download the site and then you can republish to your new host.
Tips:
New messages go to message 1
This error is caused by using upper case characters for the name of the folder (the default name of this folder when first using the Discussion Wizard is "_disc1") in which the articles are stored.
Make sure your discussion web folders are all lower case.

Jimco Updates
I have released my first FrontPage 2002 add-in, Page Margins 2002. This add-in only works with FrontPage 2002, and it is recommended that you uninstall your FrontPage 2000 add-ins prior to using it.
Page Margins 2002 is the first of many add-ins that will be released for FrontPage 2002. It sports a great new common dialog for selecting files (based upon user feedback) and also includes other new features.
All of Jimco's FrontPage 2002 add-ins are now compatible with all languages, so if you are on a non-English system and have been left out, feel free to download Page Margins 2002.
NOTE: There was a file missing from the Page Margins 2002 install package I posted last night (26-5-02). Some people already have the file installed on their system, but those that don't will get an error message when launching the add-in. I have corrected the oversight and posted an updated install package on the Web site. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A word from Rythmist at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pws-list
I have just posted a downloadable Perl login demo at
http://www.studiodeluxe.net/pws/examples/login/
The program has been tested on PWS 4.0 and Unix servers. The script uses the MD5 one-way encryption algorithm, allows new user registration, and recovered access for lost passwords or user id's.
Development on the new site is progressing well, and will include new and updated information as well as tutorials, and examples. If you have any suggestions, request, or materials that could benefit PWS users, now would be a good time to consider sharing.

Linda Johnson (member of AccessFP List) has started her own Ezine. It's called ABC ~ All 'Bout Computers and it's going to come out in text version about once a month. There's also an online version for those who prefer HTML where Linda gets to show her never-ending love of animated gifs. The online site is still under construction so it's pretty sparse, but it will give you an idea of what to expect. Linda would love to hear your comments or suggestions. This is where we conduct our virtual interview. If you would like to take this interview just cut out the questions fill them in, and send them in an email to:
VI@accessfp.net
This month we interview:
Name - Mark Whitiker
Age -
Nationality - British
Site name - The Marple Website
Site address - http://www.marple-uk.com/
Email -
Q How long have you been on the net?
A Since September 1995. It's 6 years almost to the day since I signed up with Compuserve.
Q What is your site called, when did you start it and what is it about?
A My site is called The Marple Website and it's now the Community site for Marple in Cheshire, the small town near Stockport where I live. I first started it in October 1998 but had no idea then that it would grow into what it has since become. For those who are interested, the site's development can be traced in detail through the What's New Page. Obviously the site is all about Marple and it's purpose, in addition to providing useful information to local people and potential visitors, is to try and contribute to the community spirit. The site covers many different features of Marple, including events, attractions, the canals and waterways and my favourite subject of local history. There are many contributions from people within the local community, such as a series of walking guides, a professional photo gallery and an excellent local pub guide. It is these types of top quality contributions that have made the site what it is today.
The site offers free "Community Interest" pages to local charities and non-profit making organisations. These are being taken up by a growing number of groups who are able to benefit from being part of a larger on-line community. A significant contribution to the site's interaction with the local community has been the addition of a Discussion Forum and Notice Board. This has enabled visitors to publicise local events, discuss local issues or try to find lost friends and relatives. There is also now a free classified section allowing people to advertise their wants, items for sale and make public announcements.
Q What made you choose this subject and what was the hardest part in making your site?
A The web site developed from an initial urge to learn how to make use of the free space offered by my Compuserve account around two years ago. I started off in the usual way, playing about with family photographs and hobbies and soon realised that the most, in fact the only important thing on a web site, is content. I was never going to create an interesting site about an ordinary family of four from Marple that people would want to visit.
I hit on the local theme after a friend mentioned a site he'd seen for Northwich in Cheshire. There was nothing like this for Marple or any of the surrounding areas, so I decided to give it a try. I didn't realise at the time how interested I would become in Marple and its local history or how many helpful people I would find who were willing to contribute. I am also pleased to say that I have made many new friends as a result of the site, both locally and around the world. It is their support and the feedback I've received that has encouraged me to keep on seeking new ways of improving and developing the site.
The hardest part about creating the site in the early days was that I knew nothing. Nothing about html, nothing about creating graphics and nothing about placing them where I wanted them on a page. Not to mention what software I would need or the technical problems of uploading to a remote server. In the beginning I would spend hours, even days finding out how to do something that now takes me only a few minutes. The hardest part now is keeping on top of my e-mail, monitoring the forum and still finding the time to tackle all the new ideas and projects I have lined up. I only ever seem to achieve about 50% of what I set out to do.
Q What do you think makes your site stand out from the rest?
A I think my site stands out from most other community sites because it can be seen that it's a labour of love, not a commercial enterprise. Most town or regional sites are simply showcasing a local Internet company's wares or trying to attract advertising. They do not have the time or inclination to go to the level of detail that I am prepared to because there is no profit to be made from it.
Another thing I think makes it stand out are the contributions received from the local community and their ever increasing involvement in the site.
Q Do you have any tips for other members?
A Don't succumb to too many whistles and bells. Animated graphics and shock wave and flash have instant impact but only good content regularly updated will keep visitors coming back.
Tables are the key to solving almost every problem with positioning of text and graphics. Answer every e-mail you get as quickly as possible.
Q What are your favourite sites? (Limit of 5)
A Geoff Heath's A Mellor Boyhood - Life in the Village between Two World Wars. I like this site because it is pure content with no frills (It is now much prettier. When I first visited it was just grey background and text). This site is one of the most enjoyable that I've ever come across, just a fantastic tale
of true life. http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~wgh/boyhood.htm
