GENERALLY SPEAKING

June is Bustin' Out All Over!! Is it any wonder that the news in our FrontPage Community is all good this month??
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First, something all of us webmasters need to  keep a close eye on: AOL and Microsoft have settled their suit for $750 Million, (U.S.) Does that mean we get a cut? LOL Maybe so! If you read the not so fine print, life just got a little easier for us. Imagine a world where AOL and Microsoft products are compatible with each other… not JUST compatible, mind you, but AOL and MS working together to develop expanded digital media programs (esp. music and video downloading. AFP is not really expecting miracles here, but wouldn't it be nice if our FrontPage website email functions played nice with AOL?
TIPS AND TRICKS
COLLAPSE AND EXPAND LIST
When using an outline list with many entries (such as a Family Tree) on your site, did you know that you can "collapse" and "expand" the categories (or degrees of relationship) in FrontPage 2002?
  • Highlight the text at the highest level of the list and then Right-click
  • Choose List Properties on the shortcut menu
  • Check the box Enable Collapsible Outlines
There is also a box marked Initially Collapsed. If you check this and then click the OK button, the list will be collapsed when the page is first opened in a Web browser.
Each level of your list may also be collapsed using these same steps.
GET HIGHER RANKS AND MORE TRAFFIC
By Tom Price
If you're looking for ways to boost your traffic, try seeing things from a Search Engine's perspective.
Engines provide a web location service. You supply words that express your interest, the Engine supplies links to relevant content. The idea is to send people to pages they're looking for.
Stated another way, Engines "need" to send the 'right' people to the 'right' pages. The better they are at doing this, the happier their audience. This builds reputation and trust, helping their business grow.
In order to accomplish this feat, Engines are faced with the tough task of figuring out how to "classify" all the pages they spidered.
The big hurdle isn't the sheer volume of pages, it's knowing which users to send to which pages.
Classification Confidence
-------------------------
After years of trial and error, I've learned that making my pages "easy to classify" pays big dividends in rank and quality traffic.
In fact, by helping the Engines develop high "classification confidence", I've watched my ranks move higher and visitors counts increase.
What I'm about to share with you is an easy method to accomplish something similar for your pages. It isn't rocket science or black art. It's just common sense about making certain text 'choices' in your content.
Consider what Engines are doing. They can't 'see' your layout, images or themes. But they can read your text. They check important page areas trying to calculate *what* the page is about.
What I suggest you do is leave 'classification' clues for the Engines to find in selected page areas...
Four crucial areas
------------------
For starters, Engines read your Title, Description, and Keywords tags. These items are not visible on the rendered page but they help classify your page content.
I include my primary keywords in these invisible but important areas. Check my site and you'll see page after page doing exactly that.
Then I follow through using these same keywords in Body text.
That makes a "connection" between Title, Description, Keywords and Body text. All four areas contain the exact same primary words.
These keyword clues will not be lost on the Engines. As each is found and compared to others, classification confidence builds. The page looks like a strong resource relative to those keywords. It's a good candidate for Engines to send users who are searching those keywords.
The User Experience
-------------------
Let's remember that Engines want their users to have a positive experience (including visits to our site). Making our pages easy to classify helps the Engine send visitors actively seeking content like ours.
I call this "interested" traffic.
Interested traffic is more likely to download your ebook, join your list, bookmark your site and return another day.
Contrast that to having large numbers of visitors that leave moments after they arrive and never return.
When we attract an interested audience and provide pleasing content, we are helping the Engines accomplish their goal. That can lead to higher rank and increased traffic over time. Everybody wins in this scenario; the Engines, the Visitors and the Webmaster.
EDITOR'S NOTE:
It can be tough to stay focused on whether or not particular words are appearing in crucial sections of your page.
Your editors have been testing a new FrontPage add-on to make content alignment easier and faster. This tool helps FP webmasters "align" page content so it classifies accurately, leading to higher rank for the search terms involved.
Just new pages? Oh, my, no! It also helps improve rank for existing pages. The product name is TP_RankPal. Learn all about it at the following URL: http://solution-shelf.com/AFP_RP.htm
AFP is proud to announce the debut of this new add-on as a commercial product. You can try it free without spending a dime up front. And, after installation of the free trial, you'll be able to visit the Online Help site and access a step-by-step recipe for ranking high.
FEATURED SITE
AnyFrontPage is interviewing Cheryl Wise, FrontPage MVP, for this issue. We are so excited that Microsoft has chosen Cheryl for this honor. It is particularly appropriate as this is the year for accessibility issues, which is her forté.
Q. Cheryl, Congratulations from all of us. We'll get the really basic question out of the way first. Were you surprised at all? What was your first thought?
A. Yes, pleasantly surprised. My first thought was 'cool'.
Q. How do you expect this honor to affect your participation in the community? We know how active you have been (especially on the FPList), and we understand that you are a leader in Web Technologies SIG, http://www.webtechsig.org/ and this editor (Fran) was really impressed with your presentation paper on the "History of HTML & CSS" (Secondary question - where do you get your energy?<G>)
A. Participation in mail lists has always been a bit variable. Depends on how many other commitments I have between clients and family, with 2 kids active in team sports (soccer & baseball). I don't expect the MVP to make much of a difference in how active I am but I'll admit to the occasional burnouts. It is fun watching some of the people who start out asking very basic newbie questions and get excited by the progress they make. Before long they are no longer a "newbie" having learned enough that they can answer posts. Norm on the FPlist is a great example. The enthusiasm of some of the posters to learn makes it worthwhile.
As far as energy goes, I think most of it is 'gone'.<grin />
Q. We understand that for your webdesign firm, http://wiserways.com/web/design.htm, you primarily work in FrontPage but do use other tools also; how long have you used FrontPage? What was your first website?
A. My first website was back in 1993 for a group of us who were all pregnant at the same time to post pictures and keep track of how the babies were growing. I hate to admit it but it was done in Microsoft Publisher. Fortunately, it was hosted on free ISP space and I don't remember the user id so it can't be found on the 'way back machine' at the internet archives.
The first time I used FrontPage was in 1999 when a dance group I belong to asked me to takeover their website. It was created in FrontPage and they wanted to keep it in FrontPage in case they could get a volunteer to take it over at a later date.
Q. What do you see in the near future for developments in accessibility?
A.
With Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (Americans with Disabilities Act) and the similar legislation that the UK and Australia have already enacted, accessibility is becoming something that web designers are going to have to consider when creating a site.
In some situations, such as government sites or those who receive funding from the government it is probably the most important aspect. For other business sites it is something to consider for business reasons such as reaching the broadest possible audience or preventing a lawsuit like those faced by AOL and Southwest Airlines. So far no strictly commercial business has been held liable for not having an accessible site, but legislation keeps expanding the definition of who is required to have an accessible site. So it is only a matter of time before one of the discrimination lawsuits results in a judgment for having an inaccessible site.
Q. Do you have a particular agenda that you will now bring to Microsoft's attention? Are there any particular issues that you would like to espouse - is your main focus on compliance or on accessibility features now?
A.
Even as an MVP I don't know how much Microsoft will pay attention to me.<grin /> What I'd like to see more than anything else is standards compliant code 'out of the box'. Right now it is possible to get FrontPage to create code that conforms to the W3C and WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative) but it requires you to know html and be able to 'tweak' the code. If a site is standards compliant it is usually accessible. Which isn't to say that you couldn't create a site that validated perfectly and was totally inaccessible and user-unfriendly.
Q. Do you have any one thing that you have learned that you wish you had known when starting out? (or - What advice would you give to our subscribers, who are just starting out, that might have benefited you?)
A. Learn the basics of HTML and CSS. Neither one is very difficult they are just text formatting. You don't need to write it in Notepad but you need to be able to recognize when something is wrong and how to fix it. It is rare that you will be the only one to have a particular problem. The help file is your friend, use it. Take advantage of news groups, mail lists and ezines like this one. They have lots of valuable information especially in their archives.
One final thing, don't be afraid to make mistakes. There is nothing you can do on a website that can't be fixed or scrapped. Play with the program, try different options on the menus, options buried in submenus, etc. but most important, have fun with what you are doing.
Thank you, Cheryl, for your generosity and time
- and, again, congratulations.
ASK ANNIE FRONTPAGE
Q. I'd like to know how I can get the hover effect to be restricted to the menu items and not show on the rest of the page?
A. Select a link that you want the rollover on (you must have the link selected first), and go to (this for fp02):
Format | Dynamic Html effects |
choose an event (i.e. mouse over) | choose an effect (i.e. formatting) | choose a setting (i.e. font). Choose the feature you want (i.e. all caps) Click Ok.
Do this for each link you want. Do not use page properties to enable rollover effects. That will cause it to work for any link on the page. Doing it this way, you can just have it for the menu.
